Inositol – what is it, how does it work and when should you be interested in it?

Inositol is a sugar alcohol, formerly known as vitamin B8, although it is not actually a vitamin. The body can synthesize it from glucose, and its two most important forms are myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol. This compound is often mentioned in the context of hormones, metabolism, and PCOS.

Inositol properties

Simply put, inositol is involved in processes related to insulin action and may support a better body response to this hormone. This is important because insulin is responsible for m.in. responsible for regulating blood glucose levels. Myo-inositol is more involved in the transport of glucose into cells, while D-chiro-inositol is more involved in its further utilization and storage. Currently, the most data concern the combination of myo-inositol and selenium. Some recent reviews suggest that this combination may affect TSH and certain thyroid antibodies, but it still does not replace standard diagnostics or therapy.

D-chiro inositol is also found in supplements, although this form is less common than myo-inositol.
